The Biggest Bubble

Here a story I wrote some time ago when I was a young lad…   it’s weird and boring.

The Biggest Bubble

There was a little bar beside the condo I was staying at. It was one of those bars where you sit in a hot tub and order drinks. The stools are completely submerged and the bartender stands in a sort of bunker beside the water so it gives you the illusion that she’s making you drinks and swimming all the while. It’s pretty amazing when you first see it, at least for the easily amused, and at the time I was very easily amused. I was drinking beers and enjoying the combination of the warm water below my stomach and the refreshing beverages and breezes above it. My skin was nicely tan after a few weeks on the beach and I was wearing my favorite orange swimming shorts. The bartender was a ghostly blond woman in her late twenties. Her thin body floated around the bar like a mermaid. She poured drinks with graceful and flowing movements, as if she really was swimming inside the hot tub with her patrons. The illusion was nearly complete.

Venkat Darkrider waits against the thick trunk of a tree in the still of the night. The fog is heavy, the air is biting, and unknown dangers lurk in the darkness. But he welcomes each of them all the same.

He hears footsteps approach him, dainty but laced with swagger, and recognizes them as coming from his traveling companion, the Gumpaler. Though they had both agreed on this course of action, she is still an unknown threat to him and cannot be trusted, so he keeps his grip steady on his crossbow and his mind tuned as she makes her way nearer.

She comes to a stop in front of him, somehow easily making out his location in such indiscernible obscurity. “It’s done. Even if he somehow survives that, he is in no condition to stay with us,” she explains.

Darkrider finally looks up and acknowledges her presence. “You didn’t cleanly finish the job? I thought that’s what assassins do.” Continue reading «Chapter 7: And Down We Fall»

Lilee opened her eyes and light flooded the room.  She laid there squinting at the sunlight trying to figure out where she was.  She was on a soft, comfortable, and warm bed.  The room had bright tapestries on its walls, velvet curtains around its windows, and paintings with gold frames.

“Wow” she thought. “I’m dead.”

“Hehehehe!”  She heard a distant giggle.

She sat up and her head started to pound.  Her head fell into her hands as she held it like it was about to explode.

“Nope, nope. Definitely not dead.”

“Hehehehe!” She heard the same giggle.

She opened her eyes, turned to get off the bed, and saw her sword laying on a table in front of her.  Lilee approached her sword cautiously.  She remembered the last time she tried to wield it and how it burned in her hands.  She stood as far back as she could, reached over, and poked it.  Nothing happened.  She carefully picked it up and left the room to find the mysterious giggle.

CHAPTER 5: Echoes in the Night

As Gregums scurries out of the small clinic Venkat Darkrider tries to
focus through the shooting pain of poison. He enters his “Mindkeep” to
shield his consciousness from the poison”s ruthless nerve-venom. All
at once the room becomes still, as if in the dead of night. He can
hear the town at work, but the footsteps grow increasingly further
away. Then, he enters his memories.

The lasso. It looked like just a flash from rafters. But thanks to his
incredible focus, Darkrider discerns that it is covered in the most foul
poison ever concocted: made from a rare jellyfish called the “Gasper”,
this poison melts away your heart until you drop dead three days
later. The worst part is that, aside from the initial shock, the poison
leaves not a trace until it kills you. That”s why the mixture is perfect
for assassins.

This is a setup chapter.

It had been three days since the unlikely travelers embarked on their journey west. Neither companion trusted each other, resulting in very little sleep for both. Each slept face-to-face, with their weapons at the ready and one eye open. Food was prepared and eaten individually. The only responsibility they shared was starting the fire at night.

This third day marked a milestone for both of our travelers. After years of “haunting” the woods surrounding the site of her attempted murder, Denisey would finally step beyond her realm. The edge of the woods marked the boundary of which Mr. Micha had educated Lilee.

Denisey recalled from her guards that the journey to her betrothed would take 1 week. After years of obsessing over her killer, her memory was fading and couldn”t remember how many days of travel she has completed upon her death. Her best guess was that they had only left the safety of her parents and kingdom 2 or 3 days ago. She figured based on the rate of travel, due to Lilee”s size and lack of royal horses, that they would have 3 more days to reach her goal.
